Reading Comprehension Activities for Fluent Readers. Students at this level are able to read independently and silently, so when planning lessons for fluent readers, choose short, thought-provoking leveled texts in either fiction or non-fiction genres. Set a purpose for the reading by assigning a comprehension focus. This page offers free reading and English language arts lesson and unit plans aligned with Common Core State Standards. This is the same core sequence of units and lessons that I follow with my seventh and eighth grade reading classes to prepare them to succeed on standardized tests and in high school; however, with a few tweaks I’m sure that.

The good news is that reading well is a skill that can be developed with prac-tice. This book will help, but something else will help even more: If you’re serious about developing your reading comprehension skills, go to the library or a bookstore and pick out books on subjects you find fascinating. Challenge students to write acrostic poems for the main character in a story they are reading, a topic they are studying, a favorite subject, or special interest. Play short versions of word games like Scattergories, Boggle, Taboo, and Password. Write three related words on the board or overhead and have students figure out what they have in.

Reading tests will always occur on Day 6. Reading tests will contain a comprehension section and a vocabulary section. Comprehension is weighted at 65% of your child's reading grade. Vocabulary will count as 35% of their grade.
